ON MONDAY JUNE 27 from 12-4, Sudanese diaspora from around the United States including Nuba people and Darfuris whose friends and relatives have been targeted by Sudanese armed forces will stand in Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza  to call attention to the unfolding genocide in the Nuba mountains, the ongoing genocide in Darfur and the assault on free expression and justice throughout Sudan. They will be joined by other Sudanese and American activists from the tri-state area.

On Sunday June 5, 2011, the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) entered the city of Kadugli (population approx. 100,000) with heavy war equipment including tanks. The city of Kadugli is now a ghost town except for government troops who continue to loot and burn homes, and attacks have been launched in other towns in S Kordofan with house to house searches and killings throughout South Kordofan. It is clear that the Sudanese government, under the leadership of indicted President Omer Albashir, has begun a campaign of genocide and ethnic cleansing in the South Kordofan region of Sudan.

Meanwhile, the people of Darfur struggle to survive a conflict that now commands little international attention, despite the continuation of deliberate attacks on civilians and indiscriminate aerial bombings. Renewed attacks since January 2011 have resulted in scores of civilian casualties, destruction and looting of property, and the displacement of up to 90,000 people. And increasingly, those speaking up for the victims are targeted themselves.

The rally will call for the following actions in Sudan.
•    End all attacks in Sudan that violate international humanitarian law, including deliberate attacks on civilians and indiscriminate aerial bombings; and hold all those responsible to account, regardless of rank.
•    Extension of UNMIS mandate: The Sudanese government is attempting to end the 2005 UNMIS mandate but UNMIS presence is clearly needed after July 9th
•    Fulfill obligations to cooperate with the ICC, including surrendering to the court those subject to ICC arrest warrants, such as President Albashir and imposed governor and indicted war criminal Ahmed Haroun.
•    No-Fly Zone: The immediate imposition of a No Fly Zone in Nuba Mountains/South Kordofan States and in the Darfur region is needed to protect civilians from bombings.
•    Call on the Sudanese government to ensure unfettered access by UNAMID peacekeepers and humanitarian actors to all parts of Sudan including those most affected by conflict.
•    Protection of Darfur/South Kordofan: The immediate demand is for the disarmament of the dangerous Popular Defense Force (PDF) in Nuba Mountains, South Kordofan and Sudanese government militias in Darfur.
•    End the harassment, detention and torture of journalists, human rights workers, and activists.
•    Protection of Darfur/South Kordofan: The immediate demand is for the disarmament of the dangerous Popular Defense Force (PDF) in Nuba Mountains, South Kordofan and Sudanese government militias in Darfur.

In response, we are calling on the United States and the international community to:
•    Press the Sudanese government to meet its legal obligations under international human rights and humanitarian law, and end deliberate and indiscriminate attacks against civilians, torture, rape and looting.
•    Desist from supporting businesses that fund the criminal Sudanese government;
•    Work to keep journalists in Sudan safe from detainment and abuses;
•    Protect the rights of internally displaced persons in Darfur by preventing the closure of IDP camps and allowing access to humanitarian assistance;
•    Ensure full implementation of all CPA obligations in Abyei and elsewhere; and
•    Enforce relevant Security Council resolutions.
