We, 150 participants of the Sudan Conference from 16 countries, representing Sudanese civil society and political parties, faith based organisations from inside the Sudan and outside, International Non Governmental Organisations and Institutes, Governments and Government agencies, after lengthy and frank discussions of the current and possible future socio-political situation in the country, and particularly preparations for the forthcoming Referenda and Popular Consultations as well as the situation in Darfur, state a “Kairos” moment for Sudan.

The Black Book Haunts Al Bashir’s New Cabinet

Following his kangaroo elections last month, May 20, 2010, Al-Bashir appointed his Ministers and State Ministers.  He is yet to work out his suite of advisors.  Given the turbulent years that Sudan has gone through in its recent past, it may be worthwhile to see if Al-Bashir’s post-election cabinet reflects these challenges.  The years 2001 and 2002 witnessed the publication of the seminal work, ‘The Black Book:

Obama won’t charge Blackwater with violation of Sudan sanctions

Sudanese government must bring positive changes to Darfur - mediator

June 24, 2010 (PARIS) — Any peace agreement should bring positive and tangible changes in favor of Darfur civilians irrespective of the group that signs a peace agreement with the government, said the joint chief mediator in Paris today.

Dijibril Bassole who was speaking at a press conference held in the French capital, said that the Sudanese government has to make the necessary concessions for the Darfuri people to create the needed dynamics

Darfur Peace Talks ‘Not Serious,’ Says Rebel JEM spokesman

A top official with the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) in Sudan has dismissed as a mere “publicity stunt” ongoing peace talks between the government and the Liberty and Justice Movement (LJM), another Darfur-based rebel group.

JEM spokesman Ahmed Aden said President Omar Hassan Al-Bashir and his dominant National Congress Party (NCP) are not interested in resolving the Darfur crisis.

Swedish oil co. investigated for Sudan

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, June 23 (UPI) — A Swedish investigation has been started into Lundin Petroleum’s activities in the Sudan and whether it was a party to war crimes between 1997 and 2003.

Magnus Elving, the public prosecutor, announced the investigation Monday, The Christian Science Monitor reports. Fighting erupts between SAF and JEM in south Darfur

The Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) said that the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) had recently entered Ozban area, South Darfur, causing a lot of havoc and instability to citizens, and prompting SAF to fight back JEM in the area.

The Spokesperson of SAF, Lieutenant Colonel, Al Suwarmi Khalid Saad, said that SAF inflicted heavy losses on JEM, killing 43 soldiers and wounding 90, and some of JEM’s soldiers were unaccounted for.

Qatar charity to fund projects in rural Darfur

DOHA (22 Jun.) - The Qatar Charity on Monday announced a project to improve the livelihoods of people affected by the Darfur crisis. The project, funded with 4 million riyals (more than US$1 million), aims to improve the lives of 65,000 people in Darfur. Nasser Al Kaabi, member of the Board of Directors of the Qatari foundation, said the project aims to develop rural areas in Darfur and to decrease the level of poverty,

Sudanese troops clash with rebels

The evening of Monday, June 22nd, GoS Sustained another defeat at the hands of JEM at Umkatkout, 110k south-east of El Fashir and 90K from Nyala. This defeat of SAF is second in 24 hours and ninth in six weeks.

Sudan recaptures killer of US official: newspaper

KHARTOUM (Reuters) - Sudanese security officers have recaptured one of four men who escaped from prison after being sentenced to death for the murder of a U.S. aid official and his driver, a newspaper reported on Tuesday.

There was no immediate official comment on the story, published in the Khartoum daily Akhbar al-Yawm.

Japan extends UN military mission in Sudan for one year

TOKYO, June 22 (KUNA) — The Japanese government decided on Tuesday to extend the deployment of two Ground Self-Defense Force personnel to Sudan to take part in UN peacekeeping operations there for another year to the end of June, 2011, the Foreign Ministry said. The extension was approved at a Cabinet meeting earlier in the day.

Rebel leader expects more clashes in Sudan

Khartoum - A rebel militia leader said on Sunday his forces had fought six battles with south Sudan’s army in the past week, killing scores of people in the region’s Jonglei oil state.

South Sudan’s army (SPLA) dismissed the comments from militia leader George Athor, saying it had not fought his forces since a previously-reported clash on Tuesday.

Khalil Ibrahim: Doha talks are over

The leader of the Sudanese rebel Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) declared that his movement will never participate in the Doha peace process. In an interview with Radio Dabanga today, Khalil Ibrahim also expressed indifference at the possibility of a rival rebel coalition signing a peace treaty with the Sudanese government.

Lawyers quit defense of Sudan journalists

KHARTOUM: The defense team of four Sudanese journalists on trial for alleged terrorism and false reports on arms production for Iran quit on Wednesday over “impossible” court conditions.

“The judicial authorities are making it impossible for us to defend our clients, so we are pulling out of the case,” the head of the defense team, Kamal Al-Juzuli, told AFP.

Abu Zar Ali Al-Amin, Ashraf Abdelaziz, Ramadan Mahjub and Tahir Abu Jawhara of Rai Al-Shaab newspaper have been on trial at the North Khartoum criminal court since June 9 on charges of spying and terrorism.

They are specifically accused of having published “false” reports on an alleged factory in Sudan that makes weapons for Iran. They also wrote articles suggesting that President Omar Al-Beshir, who was re-elected in April polls, did not enjoy widespread support in Sudan.
