KHARTOUM (Reuters) - Sudan signed a 1.25 billion euro deal with a private French company on Wednesday to build three solar power plants in the war-torn Darfur region, a step forward in sustainable clean energy.
The project will target producing 2000 megawatts of electricity over the next 10 years using concentrated

May 28, 2010 (KHARTOUM) — Khartoum announced today that Vice President Ali Osman Mohamed Taha will lead the Sudanese delegation to attend France-Africa summit which will be held in southern France next week.
The Conference will take place in Nice on May 31 and June 1, 2010. The annual meeting had been initially scheduled for January in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm El-Sheikh.

May 28, 2010 (KHARTOUM) — Sudanese President Omer Hassan Al-Bashir has appointed Salva Kiir Maydrit and Ali Osman Taha respectively as First Vice President and Vice President of the republic, the official SUNA reported today.
Elected with 68 percent of the votes, Bashir sworn-in for a new five-year term on Thursday in a ceremony attended by some African leaders. This is his first election in multi-party polls. In 2005, he continued to preside over the country in accordance with the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.

China has been silent about the war in Darfur in order to reap the benefits from Sudanese oil and the sale of Chinese weapons to the Sudanese government

Sudan has charged a detained opposition journalist with terrorism and espionage with his lawyers claiming on Tuesday that he was tortured in custody.
US-based rights group Human Rights Watch condemned the arrest earlier this month of opposition Islamist Hassan al-Turabi and four staff members from his al-Rai al-Shaab paper, mouthpiece of Turabi’s Popular Congress Party (PCP).

AU chief says cessation of Sudan’s south could lead to ‘major difficulties, including war’.

May 24, 2010 (LONDON) — Rebel Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) urged the UN chief and Joint Chief Mediator to facilitate the return of its leader to Darfur, saying current situation would impede efforts for peace.
Khalil Ibrahim had been banned by the Chadian authorities on May 19, from returning to Darfur through Ndjamena and returned to the Libyan capital Tripoli.

KHARTOUM, May 23 (Reuters) - Darfur rebels said they released on Sunday 63 government soldiers captured during recent fighting, the latest in a wave of clashes which have dimmed hopes of reviving peace talks.
President Omar Hassan al-Bashir is wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes in Darfur, charges he denies. The United Nations says the rebellion and Khartoum’s counter-insurgency campaign drove 2 million from their homes, sparking one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.

JEM Release 63 new POWs to ICRC
A Military Statement
Early today, JEM completed handing over of 63 Prisoners of War to the ICRC. These POWs were captured in the battle of Umsaouna, last week, May 19th.
10 of the Prisoners were handed over by the ICRC to local leaders and relatives while 53 including 23 injured soldiers were flown to government bases.

May 21, 2010 (PARIS) — The Joint Chief Mediator today welcomed the release of 44 members of the Sudanese army delivered three days ago to the Red Cross, describing it as good move showing JEM commitment to the signed framework agreement.

May 21, 2010 (WASHINGTON) – The Sudanese army today denied claims made by the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) that it has inflicted heavy casualties on government troops in the recent clashes that occurred in the restive region.
The most powerful military group said that it had killed 200 Sudanese soldiers during fighting in South Darfur while losing 4 on their end. The figures were not independently confirmed.

Salva Kiir, the leader of south Sudan’s former rebel group the SPLM, has been sworn in as the first elected president of the semi-autonomous southern region.
It follows his landslide victory in April’s elections, part of the peace deal that ended a 21-year civil war between north and south.
Next year, the people of Southern Sudan will vote on possible independence.

Khartoum denies army death toll, accuses rebels of using civilians as ‘human shields’.
KHARTOUM - Darfur’s most militarised rebel group said on Friday it had killed 200 Sudanese government troops in the western region, but the army denied the toll in the latest fighting to cloud troubled peace talks.

May 18, 2010 (KHARTOUM) – Three aid workers including a woman form the United State have been abducted today in South Darfur state by unknown gunmen on Tuesday, a UN official stated.
A United Nations press officer in Khartoum, Samuel Hendricks, said the incident occurred when the kidnappers stopped a two-vehicle convoy transporting nine aid workers in a village near Nyala.

May 18, 2010 (WASHINGTON) — US State Department has condemned today recent military escalations between the Sudanese government and Darfur rebel Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) and urged the party to resume peace talks.
The Sudanese army and the rebel JEM traded accusations of breaching a cessation of hostilities agreement inked in Doha on 23 February as part of a framework deal to end the seven years in Darfur.

Today, the ICRC concluded successfully the hand-over of 44 Sudanese Armed Forces persononnel freed by JEM in North Darfur to the Sudanese authorities in Alfasher.The complex operation has taken a whole day to complete. Three helicopters from the World Food Programme (WFP) and a fixed wing plane (Red Cross 908) were involved in the operation.

JEM Did Not Engage GoS in Jabal Moon

Please note Khartoum’s claim that its army had engaged our forces in Jabal Moon, killing over one hundred JEM soldiers and taking many as war prisoners, is false. The claim comes following crushing defeat GoS sustained at Tirtir/ Sani Fandi, along Nyala-Dein route, and in which JEM lost 8 soldiers, not 2 as we reported before.
