‘Darfur needs development’

Cairo - International donors gathered in Cairo on Sunday with the aim of raising two billion dollars for the reconstruction of Darfur, Sudan’s western region devastated by a seven-year-war.

The one-day conference has been organised by the Organisation of the Islamic Conference, (OIC), which groups 57 members to form the world’s largest Islamic assembly, and is co-chaired by Egypt and Turkey.

March 14, 2010 (KHARTOUM) — The former South African president and head of
the AU High Level Implementation Panel (AUHIP) Thabo Mbeki sent a letter to
leaders of Sudanese parties this week informing them of an indefinite
adjournment of a summit that was to bring them together to discuss a number
of thorny issues primarily related to the upcoming elections in April.

Jem leaders have been angered by other rebels holding separate talks

Darfur rebel row jeopardises Sudan peace deal

A row between Darfur rebel groups has thrown into doubt a peace deal between the rebels and Sudan’s government.
One rebel group signed a preliminary deal last month, and a final agreement was due to be completed on 15 March.
But the BBC’s correspondent in Khartoum says talks have stalled as another rebel faction pursues separate talks.

NAIROBI, Kenya — The preliminary peace treaty signed Tuesday night between the most powerful rebel movement in Darfur and the Sudanese government is the culmination of a shift in regional politics that could help bring Darfur’s sputtering conflict to an end, Sudan observers say.

The arrests followed the 2008 raid on Omdurman, near Khartoum
Sudan has freed 57 prisoners from a key Darfur rebel group, the Justice and Equality Movement (Jem), officials say.
President Omar al-Bashir announced the releases during a speech in Darfur’s capital El Fasher, and declared: “The war is over.”
The releases are part of a ceasefire deal signed on Tuesday by Mr Bashir and Jem leaders - formerly bitter enemies.

Who are the Justice and Equality Movement?

Feb 23 (Reuters) - Darfur’s Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) rebels on Tuesday said they were attacked by government forces just two days after signing a ceasefire deal with Sudan’s government.

Sudan is to offer JEM government positions as part of a peace deal to be signed in Doha later on Tuesday.

JEM starts negotiating with government to reach peace in Darfur

DOHA (22 Feb.) – The government of Sudan and the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) have signed a framework agreement in Doha, observed by President Omar al Bashir, the US-envoy Scott Gration and UN-representatives. While the attendants were celebrating, the parties had not signed due to discussions about pending issues. President Bashir however called the framework agreement a start for the peace negotiations.

JEM deplores Khartoum’s death penalty imposed on two of its members and three year jail sentence levied on a third defendant.   In the same strongest terms, JEM denounces the re-arrest of many of its members who were acquitted and set free by Khartoum Kangaroo courts in previous sittings.

Darfur JEM accuse Sudanese government of contempt toward judiciary

January 20, 2010 (PARIS) – The Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) today slammed the death sentences handed down by a Sudanese court yesterday against two of its fighters for taking part in an attack on the capital in May 2008.

So far 105 JEM members have been ordered hanged for their role in the raid amid criticism by local lawyers
